Scientific Thoughts and Components in Vedic Literature:  An Investigation in the Rgveda for its Genesis

Main Article Content

Abstract

Vedic seers used to observe all natural phenomena as the manifestation of divinity. A close study of the hymns of the Rgveda reveals that natural attributes of Agni and Maruts as observed by the seers are in clear
conformity with modern science. Also the seers did exhibit the knowledge of mathematics since they had to calculate the position of stars and planets to fix the proper time for sacrifices, daily performance of which deemed to be the most important and highest work. As early as in the Rgvedic era we can see a number of references in the Rgveda which show that man used ‘ten’ fingers to produce fire. It is quite likely that they knew additions and multiplication. The paper examines the physical features of Agni (Fire) and the Maruts (Wind) as found in the Rgveda and tries to affirm our claim that it is India to which goes the credit of enumerating some of the scientific ideas and discoveries especially in Physics and Mathematics to which Europe arrived at much later.
